“Coalition forces searched several compounds in Said Abad targeting a Taliban commander suspected of conducting attacks on coalition forces, including the June 26 attack in Wardak resulting in the deaths of three coalition service members and an Afghan interpreter,” said a coalition statement.

The militants attacked the coalition forces with grenades, machine-guns and small-arms fire from a house where they were barricaded.

Coalition forces returned fire using small-arms, grenades and an airstrike, ultimately killing the militants.

The statement did not mention the exact number of militants killed in the operation, nor whether or not there were any civilian casualties or losses on either side.

Afghanistan’s Maidan Wardak province is located some 45 kilometres south of the central capital Kabul. The province is rapidly becoming a stronghold of Taliban.

About a month back, three coalition soldiers were killed in an attack by militants in the same province.
