Ali Dabbagh, the Iraqi government spokesman, quoted Al-Maliki as saying that the Iraqi government was keen on preserving sovereignty of Iraq within the long-term agreement.

The Iraqi government, in its meeting Tuesday, discussed state-of-play of negotiations with the US regarding the agreement, said Dabbagh who noted the cabinet extended full support for the negotiating team.

“The Iraqi government underlined it is rejecting any article undermining the national sovereignty and that it is fully keen on safeguarding security, properties and money of Iraq,” said Dabbagh.

Al-Maliki, he added, said there was no common vision between the Iraqi and US governments vis-a-vis the agreement.

Al-Maliki signed a letter of intent with US President George W.Bush last December, and both sides were planning to sign the agreement on July 31 to give the US presence in Iraq a legitimate cover beyond 2008.
