New UN envoy to Lebanon arrives in Beirut

Beirut : The newly-appointed United Nations Special Coordinator for Lebanon Johan Verbeke, of Belgium, has arrived here to replace the outgoing Norwegian coordinator, Geir Pedersen.

As special representative of the UN Secretary General in Lebanon, Verbeke will take charge of the UN political and economic activities in the Arab country.

He will oversee the implementation of the UN Security Council resolution 1701 on Lebanon.
He will also work with the Lebanese government and international donor for Lebanon to achieve the UN targets in Lebanon, according to a statement issued by the UN information office here Wednesday.

Verbeke served as Belgian permanent representative to the UN since September, 2004, and was member of the UNSC peacekeeping panel in 2007, the statement noted.

He is scheduled to meet during the coming two days new Lebanese President Michel Suleiman, Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, Prime Minister-designate Fuad Siniora, Minister of Defence Elias Al-Murr and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Immigrants Fawzi Salloukh.

Pedersen started his term in office in 2005 before being appointed as special representative of the UN secretary-general in south Lebanon.
