Post of Urdu translator at Delhi’s Art & Culture Dept. vacant for 16 yrs

New Delhi: A single post of Urdu translator at Delhi government’s Art & Culture Department has been vacant for last 16 years. This despite the fact that Urdu is second official language of Delhi.

Similarly, there is not even a single Information Officer (Urdu) in the publication department. It is remarkable that both these departments are vital as they act as an interface between the public and the government.

Similar is the case of Delhi government schools where teachers are to be appointed for students interested in learning Urdu language. There are many secondary and senior secondary schools in Delhi where Urdu as a subject is not offered to students. Further, the teachers appointed through Urdu Academy have not been made permanent till date. Vacancies of Urdu teachers in many schools smack of government’s bias towards Urdu. Urdu language was accorded the status of second official language of Delhi in 2004. Some organizations and experts associated with Urdu language believe that according second official language status to Urdu was merely a Congress ploy as its government is not interested in promotion of Urdu.
