Baghdad : Eighteen US marines were killed and injured in an attack on a Multi-National Force (MNF) base in Kirkuk, northern Iraq.
A statement by the MNF said that a suicide bomber drove a vehicle, rigged with explosives, into the base and detonated his lethal charge leading to the casualties Sunday.
A US soldier met his fate during the incident. The injured were rushed to field infirmaries for treatment.
With the new casualties, the US has lost 4,094 soldiers since the operation Iraqi freedom began in March 2003.
Ten US marines have so far been killed in June.
