Washington : President George W. Bush Administration overlooks its failure to provide medical aid to illegal immigrants, says The New York Times.
The editorial reminds that like every human being, detained illegal immigrants should get minimum sanitary aid yet the Administration seems to forget its duty.
According to the source, the prison system designed for foreigners is plagued with bashing, shortage of specialized staff, is secretive, inefficient and has poor health standards.
The paper says very few US citizens are familiar with the situation and reminds the death of illegal immigrants in very suspicious circumstances.
As example are late Guinean Boubacar Bah who died after 14 days with a fractured skull and never had medical aid and Salvadoran Francisco Castaneda, diagnosed and treated of cancer too late.
Despite criticism, White House reaction remains slow and defensive rather than improving the jailed immigrants’ conditions.
The paper says 66 fatalities were reported under law enforcement command from January 2004 to November 2007, and according to humanitarian organizations, most of them remain unsolved.
The US Congress studies a law to secure medical aid to illegal immigrants jailed in the US, adds the NYT.
