New York : Reliance Industries USA, part of the Mukesh Ambani-led Indian conglomerate, plans to set up its first plant in the US in North Carolina with an investment of $215 million.
Reliance will create over 200 jobs with the Kinston plant in the area over the next five years, North Carolina Governor Mike Easley’s office said Friday.
Reliance USA makes resin used in the manufacture of plastic containers and speciality polyester yarns.
The North Carolina State Department of Commerce spokesman said the company could get as much as $2.2 million in benefits under the state’s Job Development Investment Grant programme if it meets all the requirements in its state contract. Those requirements include creating the jobs within five years and maintaining them for nine years, starting 2009.
Easley said the average annual wage for workers will be $46,500, not including benefits. The yearly average wage in Kinston’s Lenoir County is $27,040.
Reliance will take over space in a Lenoir County facility, formerly operated by Greensboro textile company, which recently closed its Kinston plant and laid off the facility’s 260 workers.
