Tehran : Iran Monday said it is ready to negotiate on the package of incentives presented by European Union (EU) foreign policy chief Javier Solana aimed at dissuading the Islamic country from uranium enrichment activities, official IRNA news agency reported.
“Iran is ready for talks with Group 5+1 on the package of incentives presented to Iran by EU foreign policy and security chief Javier Solana,” foreign ministry spokesman Mohammad-Ali Hosseini told reporters during the weekly briefing.
Solana June 14 handed over an updated package of concessions from the five permanent UN Security Council members plus Germany (P5+1) to Foreign Minister Manoucher Mottaki to dissuade Tehran from its uranium enrichment activities..
The package, included civilian nuclear cooperation as well as wider trade in aircraft, energy, high technology and agriculture.
“Iran is ready to negotiate on the common views stated in Iran’s package of proposals and the package of incentives provided by the Group 5+1,” the spokesmanm said.
“Tehran will consider the proposals suggested by the Group 5+1 and expects the other side to study the Islamic republic’s package of proposals,” Hosseini noted.
Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council Saeed Jalili Sunday said the EU member states agree with the general views of the Iranian package of proposals.
“Mr Solana greeted the package and said the EU states were agreed with the general views of the package, ” Jailili was quoted by Iran as saying.
Iran last month offered a package of proposals, which called for an improved inspection system by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), while reaffirming its “non-negotiable” right to uranium enrichment.
Iran’s nuclear power programme has given rise to serious concern in the West, which fears Tehran has a secret nuclear weapons plan.
It insisted that the Islamic country must stop uranium enrichment which at a higher grade could be used for producing an atomic bomb and has imposed sanctions on the country for refusing to do so.
Iran insisted its nuclear programme is peaceful and said enrichment activities are its “sovereign rights” which it would not compromise.
