ROK, Australia agree to boost energy, trade co-op

Seoul : South Korean President Lee Myung-bak and Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd held talks by telephone on Tuesday to discuss ways to widen bilateral economic and commercial cooperation, the presidential office said.

“In the telephone dialogue that lasted 15 minutes Tuesday afternoon, Lee stressed his wish to enhance cooperation with Australia in the fields of mineral resources and energy, in particular, while Rudd expressed his wish to accelerate negotiations on a free trade agreement with South Korea,” the office said in a press release.

“The two leaders agreed to foster an overall comprehensive cooperative relationship between South Korea and Australia in the wake of the inauguration of the Lee administration,” said the office.

The office also noted that Lee and Rudd agreed to strengthen cooperation on global issues, including climate change and denuclearization.
