London : Britain’s Prime Minister Gordon Brown has lost popularity considerably since he took office a year ago with about 60 percent voters saying the Labour Party leader is a liability rather than asset to his party, a latest poll has said.
The results of the opinion poll published by the Daily Telegraph newspaper show that 61 percent of respondents say Brown is a liability to the Labour Party compared to that of 25 percent a year ago. Only 21 percent believe he is an asset to the ruling party.
On Brown’s personal rating, 49 percent say he is doing a worse job than Tony Blair and only eight percent say he is a better prime minister.
Two-thirds of voters say their view of Brown as a prime minister has gone down in the last year, whereas a mere 16 percent think Labour will win the next general election.
A total of 71 percent of people surveyed believe the government does not have a clear sense of direction.
Supporters for the opposition Conservative Party are on the rise, with 67 percent say the Tories will form the next government.
However, a silver lining is that Labour’s rating has climbed five points from last month and is now standing at 28 percent. The Tories have 46 percent of support, while the Liberal Democratic Party has 15 percent.
Labour’s support has dwindled since Brown dismissed an early election last October, to be followed with poor performances in the local election, when Labour retreated to the third place and polled only 24 percent of the vote.
Recent economic difficulties in Britain in wake of the credit crunch and rising food and oil prices were also blamed on his leadership. Analysts suggest Brown should take powerful measures to prop up the economy in the two years before the next general election to regain his advantage over the opposition.
