Army spokeswoman: Israel lifts closure on West Bank

Jerusalem : The closure imposed on the West Bank following last Thursday’s shooting incident in Jerusalem was lifted on Sunday evening, an Israeli army spokeswoman confirmed to Xinhua on Monday morning.

Meanwhile, the Israeli police continues to be on high alert in the wake of the shooting attack at Mercaz Harav Yeshiva school in Jerusalem on Thursday, in which eight students were killed and some ten others injured.

Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak ordered the closure last Friday, which only allowed passages in humanitarian and medical cases.

On Saturday, the Israeli army held a meeting to evaluate the situation, following which it decided to extend the closure by another 24 hours.

Israeli Police Commissioner Dudi Cohen held a special meeting with senior security officials on Sunday to discuss the force’s deployment in view of the attack. He ordered to leave the alert level high, and instructed the police to boost routine security measures.

An Palestinian gunman infiltrated the Mercaz Harav rabbinical seminary in the Kiryat Moshe quarter of Jerusalem on Thursday evening and opened fire on a crowded study hall, killing eight young students.

The police’s alert level has been boosted immediately, and military forces increased their operations to prevent any further incident from taking place.
