“There is a need for changing the educational exchange agreement signed between India and the US in 1950. The bi-national organisation was established after the agreement,” USEFI chairperson Adnan A. Siddiqi told reporters Wednesday.

“India should be an equal partner to the extent that whatever fund US shares, India too contributes the same. We are hopeful that the Indian government will honour our concern,” Siddiqi explained.

He said that the programme needed to be expanded. “We need to enhance the capacity so that more scholars can benefit,” he said and added that Indian officials have shown interest in changing the 58-year-old agreement and to expand the programme.

Many countries are contributing financially towards the Fulbright Fellowship programme.

“We have had talks with the government and we are quite hopeful that it would materialise,” said Siddiqi.
