Chandigarh, March 24 (IANS) Farmers from Pakistan on a visit to Punjab in India Monday evinced interest in farming technology transfer between both countries to improve productivity.
An 18-member farmers’ delegation from Pakistan met Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal here. Syed Hussain Jahanian Gardezi, vice chairman of the Farmers Associates, led the Pakistani team.
The visitors showed interest in technology transfer in the field of agriculture to increase the production of wheat, cotton, maize, barley and sugarcane in both countries.
Badal, meanwhile, suggested that Pakistani farmers try growing ‘Kinnow’ fruit as it was successful in Punjab.
Expressing concern over the depletion of ground water table, especially in Indian Punjab, the delegation urged Badal to take effective measures to reverse the trend.
“Otherwise, it will create an abnormal situation beyond one’s control and jeopardize the future of our generations,” Gardezi said.
He said that 92 percent of agriculture in Pakistan depended on canal irrigation, which was quite efficient, while just 8-10 percent relied on tube well irrigation.
