Sania moves up to 31st spot in WTA rankings

New Delhi : A pre-quarterfinal appearance last week in the Pacific Life Open in the US saw India’s Sania Mirza move up one place to 31st position in the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) rankings issued Monday.

En route to the last 16, the 21-year-old Hyderabadi beat Shahar Peer of Israel in the third round.

Sania’s fine run in the doubles also ensured she jumped three places to the 22nd position in the latest doubles ranking. She and Bethanie Mattek of the US made it to the semi-finals of the tournament last week.

Meanwhile, India’s second best woman tennis player Sunitha Rao moved an impressive five places upward to 170th position in the WTA chart. The US-based Indian finished runners-up in the ITF Challenger in Greater Noida Saturday.

Among men, Mahesh Bhupathi climbed up four rungs to the 13th spot in the latest Association of Tennis Professional (ATP) doubles rankings, while his estranged partner and Davis Cup teammate Leander Paes dropped two places to the 20th position. Another Indian Rohan Bopanna moved up one place to 54th spot in doubles.
