New Delhi : The central government has turned the down the Uttar Pradesh government’s request for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into various cases of alleged irregularities during the previous regime headed by Mulayam Singh Yadav.
The Department of Personnel had sought the opinion of the CBI on the cases referred to by the state government, including the irregularities in the police recruitment, but the investigating agency did not deem them fit for investigation, CBI sources said Wednesday.
Since the time Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati came to power last year, she has sought CBI probes into at least eight high-profile cases, mostly involving politicians.
The cases include the murder of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) legislator Raju Pal, distribution of a derogatory CD, out-of-turn allotment of prime plots in Noida and pilferage of food grains from the public distribution system (PDS).
Former chief minister Yadav and his brother Shivpal Yadav are the main accused in at least three of the cases.
The CBI’s legal department told the government that Uttar Pradesh has constituted a commission to look into the alleged irregularities in the recruitment scam following which over 50 policemen were suspended, the sources said.
The agency has also questioned the merits of the food grain scam saying it is too local and does not have inter-state ramifications, they added.
