Dharamsala : The Tibetan government-in-exile in India here Monday denied reports that Chinese students in Britain had protested against Tibet independence about a week ago.
Citing the report “Chinese students in UK demonstrate against Tibet independence” on a website of the Chinese government, the spokesperson of the Tibetan government-in-exile dismissed the reports as false.
The official said no such demonstrations took place in London by 18 Chinese students in front of the British parliament and Tibet House on March 22. In fact “this report is a fabrication”.
“We are not aware of any such demonstrations. If we had seen any Chinese protests we would have invited them to discuss their grievances, in line with His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s emphasis on dialogue and non-violence,” said the spokesman here.
“Our Tibet House office in London did not see any Chinese that day around the premises. Prior permission of the police has to be sought for any such protests in UK. But police next door deny that any such permission was sought,” the spokesman claimed.
“So we would like to urge the Chinese authorities to instead put more effort to resolve the Tibet issue rather then waste resources in such gimmicks,” the official said.
The protests by Buddhist monks in Tibet that began March 10 have left at least 22 people dead, according to the Chinese government. However, the Tibetan government-in-exile says 140 people were killed.
