New Delhi : A Delhi advocate Friday urged the Supreme Court to launch contempt of court proceedings against the Bar Council of India (BCI) for undertaking a survey to determine the public opinion about corruption in the judiciary as well as its performance and competence.
“We are always at the receiving end,” a bench headed by Chief Justice K.G. Balakrishnan observed as advocate V.B. Joshi told the bench that he has filed an application seeking contempt proceedings against the Bar Council of India authorities and sought a date for its early hearing.
As the court did not show much interest, Joshi said he was planning to file a detailed petition.
At this the bench observed, “Why do you need our permission for filing a writ petition?”
Joshi said he would formally file a petition on Monday.
Joshi raised the issue on the basis of a newspaper report which quoted the BCI chairman as saying that the regulatory body was in the process of eliciting views of various state bar councils and bar associations to assess the depth of corruption.
