China’s Hu Welcomes Olympic Athletes

Beijing : Chinese leader Hu Jintao sent a warm welcoming message to all athletes and visitors who are expected to travel to China to attend the 2008 Olympic Games in August.

According to Hu, the Games not only belong to the Chinese people, but to all Asian peoples and the world in general.

In remarks to representatives of 16 Japanese media organizations in Beijing, on the eve of his upcoming state visit to Tokio, Hu referred to the significance of the world’s greatest sports event.

Holding a successful Olympics entails the responsibility to promote the Olympic spirit of solidarity, friendship and peace, to increase understanding and mutual relations among peoples of the world, said Hu.

I think that with the broad participation of the people worldwide, including the Japanese people, and the support of the Olympics international family, the Beijing Olympics will undoubtedly be a top-quality event, the Chinese president added.

Hu’s remarks coincided with the three-day Olympic torch relay celebrations in Sanya, the southernmost Chinese city, in Hainan Island.
