Islamabad : A suicide bomber on Tuesday tried to attack a security check post in northwestern Pakistan, killing three people and injuring five others, local TV channel DAWN NEWS reported.
A man in a cycle rickshaw tried to enter the check post in Bannu city in North West Frontier Province (NWFP) before being stopped by the police. The suspect blew himself near the post, killing himself and two other policemen, said the report.
Five people sustained injuries in the attack and were taken to a military hospital for treatment in Bannu.
No group claimed responsibility for the attack. Security forces cordoned off the area after the blast.
Attacks on security forces are carried out again after the Pakistani Taliban ended peace talks with the government. It is the second attack on security forces in the northwest in two days following the end of peace talks and ceasefire by the Taliban.
A soldier was injured when Taliban militants attacked an army patrolling team in South Waziristan tribal region on Monday.
An umbrella militant group Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) on Saturday stopped further talks with the jirga of tribal elders, claiming that the federal and the NWFP government was not sincere in peace talks.
They said the government’s refusal to withdraw troops from the tribal areas was the main reason for the suspension of the peace talks.
Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani said on Sunday that the government would not talk to terrorists or extremists, although it was willing to hold dialogue with those who surrendered their arms.
TTP chief Baitullah Mehsud on April 23 asked his militants to stop violence in Waziristan, Tank, Dera Ismail Khan and other areas in the northwest for bringing peace to the region. They claimed that negotiations were going on with the government on a possible peace accord and demanded the withdrawal of troops from the tribal areas.
