The clashes started in the central Corniche Masra area, and extended to the Ras El Nabah, Beshara Al Juri and Barbur neighborhoods, and the Bekaa valley in eastern Lebanon, according to police sources.

They did not report victims so far in this metropolis, but asserted that at least six people were wounded during the clashes in the Bekaa valley.

National media have reported explosions of mortar projectiles in different areas of the capital, and asserted that there are snipers positioned on some buildings.

They also said that Corniche el Masra was taken by groups of armed people and the population remains inside homes.

Television clips have shown combats in several buildings of Beirut. In the reports, army members can be seen deployed in the streets, and occasionally interfere in the clashes.

This tense situation broke out Wednesday, when a general strike, called by the Lebanese unions to demand salary rises, resulted in an open political clash that stopped the country.
