Kozhikode : Congress state president Ramesh Chennithala Wednesday asked Kerala’s ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) for a white paper on illegal encroachments on government lands and the area reclaimed after vacating these.

“On its first anniversary, the government declared with great fanfare that it will vacate all the illegal encroachments in the state. But the government failed to vacate a single encroachment,” Chennithala said at a press conference here.

Chennithala said the government had no moral right to celebrate its second anniversary, which falls May 18, as it had failed in all fronts.

Last year, the government conducted a campaign to vacate land encroachments in Munnar in Idukki district, around 200 km from Kochi, and demolished about 100 structures. However, the campaign got bogged down in political opposition from within the ruling Left Front.

“The chief minister, who talked tough against land encroachments, remains a mute spectator as this illegal activity continues unchecked in the state. The task forces constituted by the government to vacate encroachments either failed or were disbanded,” he alleged.

The Congress leader also said that the ‘record-breaking’ results for the Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) examination announced Tuesday were “inflated”.

The pass percentage for the SSLC examination this year was 92.09 percent. There were widespread allegations that the state authorities made liberal paper valuation to push up the pass percentage.
