“Today’s decision aims to facilitate the mission of the Arab ministerial committee on Lebanon,” Lebanese Information Minister Ghazi Aridhi told reporters here following a cabinet meeting.

“Prime Minister Fuad Siniora briefed the cabinet meeting, chaired by him, on the results of his talks with the Arab ministerial committee co-chaired by Arab League Secretary General Amr Moussa and Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Hamad bin Jassem Al-Thani,” Aridhi disclosed.

“The government aims to help the Arab mediators implement the Arab initiative for Lebanon.

“It reversed on the two earlier decisions which were used (by the opposition bloc) as a pretext to seize the capital city with force and put the civil peace at real risk,” the minister explained.

“The move was also made in the light of the statement of the Lebanese army on field measures to control security situation, ensure safety of citizens and prevent arms displays nationwide.

“The government gives top priority to the higher interests of the country and can not hesitates in taking the necessary steps to facilitate mission of the Arab mediators,” he added.

Al-Aridhi hailed Wednesday move as “grave” and voiced hope that it would defuse the tension and open new era of national unity.

The two controversial decisions, which had not taken force yet, led to eight days of bloody confrontations between the loyalists of the ruling coalition and the opposition.

The government’s backpedal is expected to be widely hailed by the Arab mediators and the Hizbullah-led opposition parties which declared a state of civil disobedience in protest against the two decisions.

Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Mohammad Ali Hosseini said in TEHRAN if Arab League delegation to Lebanon can reach a comprehensive solution, Iran will support it.

According to the report of Foreign Ministry Media Department on Wednesday, Hosseini said, “In direction of creating understanding among all Lebanese sides, Iran will support any kind of comprehensive agreement which can be accepted by all sides in Lebanon.”

In DAMASCUS, Ministry of Foreign Affairs affirmed on Wednesday Syria’s support of the efforts of the Arab Ministerial Committee chaired by Qatar, which aims to implement the Arab Initiative as a complete plan with its three articles.

In a statement, the source said “Syria urges all Lebanese parties to cooperate with the Committee and resort to national dialogue to achieve consensus, which would end the crisis in Lebanon and guarantee its safety and stability.”
