Kolkata : People who get their water from municipal authorities here should start paying for it so that there was no unnecessary use, says Mayor Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharyya.
In an interactive session with the Bengal National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BNCCI) Wednesday on how to make the City of Joy more liveable, Bhattacharyya stressed on the need to preserve water.
“Water levy should be imposed to reduce unnecessary water consumption in the city,” he said.
Issues discussed at the session ranged from healthcare and allied hazards to ground water resource management policy to infrastructure development projects.
Bhattacharyya explained his plans to keep the city clean by constructing better sewerage and cleaning the hospital areas at least thrice a day.
The mayor claimed road conditions in the city were good and said many road construction projects were underway. The state government is building many roads under the public private partnership model.
Talking about the large number of hawkers who clog city streets, Bhatacharyya wanted their rehabilitation to be taken up seriously.
He also wanted stringent fire safety rules to reduce damage in case of fire. The mayor said in future no commercial licences would be issued to firms unable to meet fire safety norms. A fire in the city’s wholesale market Burrabazar this January raged for four days, gutted around 2,500 shops and caused losses worth billions.
