Oncologists says 40 cases being detected daily

Sopore : While cancer has been claiming lives all over the world, oncologists in the Valley maintain that the killer disease claims at least 20 to 30 lives daily across Kashmir Valley.
Oncologists made this shocking revelation at a ‘Cancer Awareness Conference and First Practitioner’s Meet’ held at North Kashmir’s Sopore township in Jammu and Kashmir’s Baramulla district.
The experts believe that almost 15 patients among the causalities could be the cancer survivors if preventive measures are taken and joint efforts are made to fight the cancer at every stage.
Doctors and medical practitioners working in different urban and rural districts of North Kashmir participated in the conference organized here for the first time by Hakim Sanaullah Specialist and Cancer Center Sopore in collaboration with Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute New Delhi.
“In the entire subcontinent, disparities in the outcome of cancer depends upon the outcome of resources but it has been found that there are 110 to 120 new cases present in one lakh of populace and so far as the Kashmir valley is concerned at least 40 new cases are detected every day and almost 20 to 30 patients die daily due to this deadly disease,” said Dr Shad Salim Akhtar.
Adding he said that at least 15 cases are preventable but it needs painstaking efforts.
The conference with the theme “Cancer Awareness’ focused on the management of cancer in countries with limited resources.
The speakers stressed upon all the doctors and medicos to work for the cancer prevention activities and need for joint efforts to fight this deadly disease.
When asked about the genetic factor of cancer, Dr. Shaoib Zaidi, Consultant Surgical Oncologist Batra Hospital New Delhi, said that there are some kinds of cancer like breast and uterus and other organ cancer which are genetic.
Replying to question about the Kangri Cancer cases in the valley, Dr Shaoib told News Agency of Kashmir said that earlier such cancer cases was rampant in the valley now as people has curtailed the use of Kangri the incidence of cases have also decreases.
Practicing physicians and doctors deliberated upon various topics related to cancer which include an unusual case of appendicuar lump, common ophthalmologic problems for GPs, double jeopardy, oncological nursing care, esophageal carcinoma a story, recent advances in esophageal cancer surgery and cancer undefeated.
Emphasizing the need of awareness and education about cancer among health care providers and the general population, oncologists said that it has become necessary for all to create an atmosphere for cancer care and cure facilities so that the people living in the far off village can get benefit as they have not access to the high profiled and expensive hospitals.
