Ramallah : Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas may resign if Israeli-Palestinian peace talks reached a deadlock, negotiator Saeb Erekat said on Tuesday.
“If Israel continued these plays until the end of 2008, President Abbas will have all options open for him,” Erekat told Voice of Palestine radio.
“President Abbas is not one of those who stick to his post or chair,” Erekat added.
After years of stall, Israel and the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) resumed their peace talks over establishing a Palestinian statehood after a U.S.-host international conference on Mideast in November last year.
The U.S. administration mediated in the resumption of the talks, hoping both sides will reach a deal before President George W. Bush leaves office.
Israel continued expansion of settlements in the West Bank, one of the territories which will be part of the upcoming Palestinian statehood. The settlement activities anger the PNA and block the progress of the peace talks.
By building settlements and installing roadblocks in the West Bank and Jerusalem, “Israel will not change the international community’s stance that a Palestinian statehood should be founded.” Erekat denounced.
