Gaza : A Palestinian activist drove a booby-trapped truck into Erez Crossing on Thursday, killing himself and causing extensive damage to the installation.
Al-Aqsa Brigades, the military wing of Fatah, and Al-Quds Brigades, the military wing of Islamic Jihad, have officially claimed responsibility for the attack, which they named “Volcano of Wrath.”
According to witnesses, the bombing was preceded by the launch of a number of mortar shells at the crossing, before the activist drove the truck at the crossing.
A second vehicle, an SUV, overturned close to the crossing. It was apparently set to have participated in another attack, the witnesses said.
Meanwhile, the brigades identified the Palestinian activist who waged the attack as 23-year-old Ibrahim Nasr from the village of Jabaliya.
Al-Quds Brigades spokesman, Abu Ahmad, said the truck had been laden with four tons of explosive materials, adding that some Israeli soldiers were wounded in the attack.
On the Israeli side, an army spokesman maintained that there were no resultant casualties, adding that the truck was loaded with “hundreds of kilograms of explosive material.”
