Sydney : West Indian bowling great Andy Roberts has warned Australian batsmen to be wary of paceman Fidel Edwards, claiming that the ear-studded youngster would be a constant threat to them throughout the three-Test series.
“He showed a lot of good pace out there and the Australian batsmen were not comfortable with him,” Roberts, one of the most feared bowling enforcers of the 1970s, was quoted as saying in the Daily Telegraph.
“I think that will continue to happen and I am certainly hoping so.
“Inconsistency has been a problem for Fidel in the past but he has certainly improved his control and looks very good at the moment,” he said.
Edwards was a one-man destructive cruise missile as he bowled with sharp pace to take eight wickets in the first Test (five for 104 in the first innings and three for 40 in the second).
Edwards’s sixth five-wicket Test haul which included openers Phil Jaques, Simon Katich and middle-order weapon Brad Hodge, made Australia sit up and take notice.
However, the man who was spotted in the nets by Brian Lara in 2003 – making his Test debut after just one first-class match – has a poor Test bowling average that hovers over the 40 mark.
