Vertigo is the spinning or whirling effect a person experiences when looking up or down. The feeling only lasts a short while, but it can be severe.

The new study has found that a few simple manoeuvres of the head and body can treat vertigo.

“Instead of telling patients to ‘wait it out’ or having them take drugs, we can perform a safe and quick treatment that is immediate and effective,” said Terry D. Fife of the University of Arizona, who led the study.

Vertigo is believed to be caused by loose calcium carbonate crystals that move in the sensing tubes of the inner ear.

The manoeuvres developed by Fife move the calcium crystals out of the sensing tube and into another chamber of the ear, from which they can be absorbed.

The study also evaluated whether restrictions on activity are needed after the manoeuvres are performed.

“There is no clear evidence to support these restrictions, which include sleeping upright and wearing a cervical collar,” Fife said.

The findings of the study have been published in the latest issue of Neurology, the journal of the American Academy of Neurology.
