US to withdraw 4,000 soldiers from Iraq

Baghdad : The US Army has said that it will withdraw 4,000 of its soldiers from Iraq next June as a result of the improvement of the country’s security situation.

A US Army press release Thursday said soldiers from the 4th Stryker Brigade Combat team of the 2nd Infantry Division, will redeploy to Fort Lewis base in the United States.

It said that the soldiers were deployed in the Iraqi province of Diyala in April 2007 as part of a plan to achieve security in Iraq.

US forces cooperated with the Iraqi police forces in combating corrupt members of the local forces, rebuilding the infrastructure, and constructing training centres, it pointed out.

The brigade will be the fourth to US brigades to be withdrawn from Iraq after the improvement of security situation.
