The bus was travelling to Berlin when it burst into flames, apparently because of a technical defect, police said.

The driver pulled over to the side of the motorway and a dozen passengers managed to flee the burning vehicle, but the others were trapped inside and died, officials said.

The interior of the bus was completely gutted by the fire, witnesses said.

The fire brigade recovered Zimmer frames (walking aid) from the bus indicating that some of the passengers were elderly people.
