Several insurgents killed in Afghanistan — coalition

Kabul : The US-led coalition said it killed nine militants in two separate operations executed in southern and southeastern Afghanistan.

A military statement said Thursday that an insurgent associated with the Haqqani foreign fighter facilitator network and one of his associates were killed in Khost province this morning.

In Zazai Maidan district, coalition forces targeted an extremist known to assist the Haqqani terrorist network with the movement of insurgents into Afghanistan.

These fighters had carried out numerous suicide and improvised explosive device (IED) attacks in the region, according to the statement.

Separately, the Afghan army and coalition forces killed several insurgents during a patrol in Shah Walikot district of Kandahar province.

Insurgents ambushed a coalition security patrol. The troops responded killing several of them.

Quoting Kandahar province police chief Matiullah, the statement said several civilians were injured while attempting to leave the area of fighting.

“Coalition reports confirmed nine insurgents were killed,” the statement added.
