This second meeting on WASH, the English acronym for water, sanitation and hygiene, has been organized by the UN Economic and social Commission for Asia and the Pacific.

A press release published in this headquarters said government officials, donors, groups of the civil society, academics and representatives of the private sector are participating in the meeting.

Official statistics have revealed that despite progress in recent years, almost one of every five Asians lacks improved sources of water, although there are technical feasibility and low-budget solutions.

ESCAP Poverty Reduction Department head Yip Kioe Sheng said it is necessary to do more to make politicians know more about this extreme situation and about the most effective practices, currently used in the world, in that direction.
