Singur : Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee Saturday demanded global tenders for setting up industry at the abandoned land of Tata Motors’s Nano plant site in West Bengal.
“Global tenders should be called to set up industry on the 600 acres and the rest of the land should be given back to the unwilling farmers,” Banerjee said.
Tata Motors was forced to pull out its plant for the world’s most inexpensive car, Nano, from here Oct 3 after the project faced massive opposition from “unwilling” farmers led by Banerjee over “illegal” acquisition of farmland. The global auto major had taken up the project of the Nano factory in 2006. The land was acquired for the auto major by the state government. The factory was relocated to Sanand in Gujarat.
Banerjee asked the government to let the opposition and the farmers know about its decision by Dec 2.
“Else, the opposition along with farmers, will be left with no options than setting up tea stalls and cucumber stalls in and around the (abandoned) factory site,” she said.
Her party has called for a central convention Dec 2.
The Trinamool Congress chief was addressing a rally to mark the victory of the Tapasi Malik murder case.
A court convicted the prime accused, Suhrid Dutta, Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) Singur zonal committee secretary, for masterminding the conspiracy for the murder of the 18-year-old Tapasi in December 2006.
