About 400,000 Vietnamese Suffer From Blindness

Hanoi : About 400,000 Vietnamese people suffer from blindness while 1.5 million people lost sight in one eye, according to figures released by the Vietnamese National Institute of Ophthalmology (NIO) ahead of the World Sight Day.

The rate of blindness currently stood at 0.43 in Vietnam, the Chinese news agency XINHUA quoted the NIO figures as showing.

The main causes include cataract and glaucoma.

According to NIO, about 75 percent of the visual impairments in Vietnam could be cured today, including glaucoma. However, only 50 percent of the people suffering from glaucoma receive operation.

The World Sight Day falls on Oct 9 this year. It is usually celebrated on the second Thursday of October each year.
