Srinagar : Two Pakistani guerrilla commanders of the Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) militant outfit were killed in a gun battle in north Kashmir Thursday, the police said.
Zaheer Ahmed alias Pasha of Pakistan, the chief operational commander of the JeM, was killed in the shootout that erupted in Warpora village in Sopore, around 50 km from here, a police spokesman said.
The police in a joint operation with 22 Rashtriya Rifles of army and 179 battalion of paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force raided the house of Fayaz Ahmad Ganie at Ganie Mohalla in the north Kashmir village, where the militants were hiding.
An exchange of fire took place during which “two militants belonging to the Jaish-e-Mohammed were killed”, the spokesman said.
Another militant killed in the gunfight was identified as Saifullah alias Faisal of Faisalabad, Pakistan, the spokesman said, adding Saifullah was the operational commander for the Lolab valley in north Kashmir Kupwara district.
Zaheer Ahmed, the police said, “was active in the Kashmir valley since 1998 and was reportedly involved in various militant activities”.
Two AK 47 rifles, seven magazines, 180 AK rounds, a wireless radio set and two pouches were claimed recovered from the shootout site.
