Normal life across Kashmir valley was disrupted Friday by the strike called by a faction of the Hurriyat Conference led by Syed Ali Shah Geelani.

Kashmir Coordination Committee, an amalgam of pro-freedom parties and civil society groups spearheading the present movement had issued a general appeal for peaceful protests on Friday and urged Kashmiris to send e-mails to the UN secretary general, Ban Ki-moon reminding him of UN pledge of plebiscite in Kashmir six decades ago.

Clashes also broke out at several places as the police and the paramilitary forces tried to stop pro-independence marches.

Twenty people, including the TV cameraman were injured in the street battles.

Geelani in a statement said that strike was observed to remind the United Nations of its commitments towards the resolution of the Kashmir issue.

UN Day, the anniversary of the United Nations charter coming into force in 1945, is observed annually on October 24.

The UN has maintained a presence in Kashmir since 1949 and currently monitors the Line of Control dividing Indian- and Pakistan- controlled Kashmir.
