Baghdad : According to latest released statistics, the US military forces are still keeping 19,000 Iraqi inmates at their prisons inside Iraq.
According to IRNA correspondent in Baghdad, the Public Affairs Consultant of the US Forces in Iraq, Karim al-Sayyab, announced the statistics here Monday, adding that there are 170 teenagers and ten women among them.
Al-Sayyab expressed hope in a press conference that by the end of the holy fasting month of Ramadan, 70 of the above mentioned prisoners would be freed.
The commander of the occupying US forces in Iraq had earlier announced that the US officials intend to free some 3,000 Iraqi inmates by the end of Ramadan.
There are various statistics on the number of Iraqi prisoners at US camps in Iraq, some of which claim there are at least 30,000 Iraqi imprisoned at US jails in their own country.
According to the same reports, a noticeable number of those inmates are Iraqi teenager and women.
The elected Iraqi government has been entangled in negotiations with US officials aimed at transferring the Iraqi inmates to official Iraqi prisons during the past couple of years, having gained very insignificant results so far.
