New Delhi : A tense calm reigns on Sunday in the Indian capital after five bombs exploded in quick succession in crowded markets and streets in the heart of Delhi on Saturday, killing at least 30 people and wounding 100 more.
Traffic and the number of people in the streets has decreased compared to any other Sunday morning, while the 15-million-inhabitant city is under maximum alert, with increased police presence.
Five bombs exploded Saturday within a 45-minute period at the markets of M Block, in Greater Kailash; Ghaffar, in Karol Bagh, and Connaught Place. The police deactivated four other bombs.
The president of the ruling Congress Party visited hospitals on Saturday night to learn about the wounded, and the central government said it would grant monetary aid to the families of the victims and to the wounded.
Delhi authorities said they would pay for medical care for the wounded.
The terrorist attacks in New Delhi are similar to those that have taken place over the past four months in Jaipur, Bangalore and Ahmadabad, and the sabotage attempts in Surat, which have taken a toll of 157 deaths and more than 300 wounded.
NDTV 24×7 reported that the police had arrested seven individuals who are suspected to be responsible for the bombings, and had accused the Indian Mujahedeen (IM), which is linked to the proscribed Student Islamic Movement of India (SIMI), of masterminding the attacks.
Delhi Police spokesman Rajan Bhagat said they have “vital clues to the series of bombings and expect to close the case soon.”
The police think the IM-SIMI cell led by Abdul Subhan, a young technician in Mumbai and Qayamuddin, is behind the bomb attacks in New Delhi.
