New Delhi : The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Tuesday asked the government to clarify its stance on state-specific anti-terrorism laws after the home ministry reportedly countered National Security Advisor M.K. Narayanan’s call for such legislation.
“We want the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government to clarify if Narayanan’s demand to approve state-specific anti-terror laws was rejected,” BJP spokesperson Rajiv Pratap Rudy told reporters here.
Accusing the government of not going for a stringent anti-terror law, Rudy said: “Home Minister Shivraj Patil is not the only one responsible for failure of internal security. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s government under the leadership of UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi is totally incompetent.”
Besides Gujarat, other BJP-ruled states like Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan have sought the central government’s green signal for their anti-terror laws on the lines of the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA).
While Narayanan last week supported such laws, the home ministry reportedly shot down the proposal.
