Bhopal: A night watchman of a Christian institution was shot at and injured by a group of unidentified five persons with Air Guns in the wee hours of Tuesday morning when he refused to call the sisters of the convent in Banduha village under the Ghatia Police station area in Ujjain district of Madhya Pradesh.
According to Fr. Anand Muttungal, PRO & Spokesperson Catholic Council of Bishops, Madhya Pradesh, a group of five persons came with Air Guns to the Carmel Convent around 1.30 am on Tuesday and shot Amar Singh , the watchman, when he refused to obey their orders. He was shot at three places but is stated to be out of danger.
The watchman reportedly said: “the culprits asked me to call the sisters but I told them that they were out of station. They beat me up and asked me to cry loud so that sisters would come out. They shot me with air gun when I disobeyed and went away.”
According to police since the persons had covered their faces nobody could be identified, we are using all possible ways to nab the culprits.
Superintendent of Police Ujjain said ” We are using all information to arrest the accused, we came to know very late that there was slipper of the accused, we will use dog to trace the culprits. We have taken all steps to give better security to Christian institutions in the district.”
Sr. Dhanya informed that four days back a group of four persons had come in the night and was roaming around the convent. When the watchman raised alarm they ran away. It looks that the same party came today also.
Bishop Dr. Sebastian Vadakkel has expressed deep sorrow over the incident. He has called upon people of goodwill to extend support to the Christian community.
“It cannot be treated as stray incident in Madhya Pradesh. There are series of attacks taking place here. It is always done in different methods; we are in touch with the higher officials and leaders from different socio-political organizations. We are peace loving people so violence is not our way of living” said Fr. Muttungal. ([email protected])
