Soldier commits suicide in Kashmir

Jammu : An Indian Army soldier allegedly committed suicide by hanging at a military camp in Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir Tuesday.

Police sources told IANS that hawaldar Raj Kumar Yadav of 64 Field Regiment hanged himself to death in Nowshera town of Rajouri district in Jammu region, 110 km from the state’s winter capital.

“The cause of suicide could not be immediately ascertained,” said a police official.

Incidents of fratricidal shootouts and suicides by security men have been bothering senior officials of the army and paramilitary forces ever since he separatist violence broke out here in the early 1990s.

The services of counsellors, creation of recreational facilities inside camps, regular leave to personnel so that they join their families are some of the measures taken to address the menace as continued deployment amid highly hostile conditions is cited as a reason for such incidents by experts.
