New Delhi : A former Congress legislator climbed a nearly 30-foot-tall tree at the party’s national headquarters here Saturday afternoon to draw attention to his demand for a ticket in the Lok Sabha polls. From the top branch, he threw copies of his bio-data to press his case.
According to the bio-data, the man is 50-year-old Prem Pal Singh Samrat, a former legislator from Uttar Pradesh’s Jalesar during 1985-1989. He wants to contest the Lok Sabha election from Hathras constituency, which is reserved for Scheduled Castes.
According to some eyewitnesses, Samrat, bare-chested and clad in a white dhoti, climbed the tree soon after Congress spokesperson Jayanti Natarajan completed a media briefing at the Congress headquarter at 24 Akbar Road.
“He is shouting slogans like ‘Sonia Gandhi ki jai jo’. ‘Rahul Gandhi ki jai ho’ and ‘Priyanka Gandhi ki jai ho’ (long live Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi),” said an eyewitness.
“He is also raising slogans against Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi for his remarks against the Congress party,” the eyewitness added.
The eyewitnesses said fire fighters and police officials were yet to arrive at the scene. “There is no Congress leader at the scene either. Journalists were asking him to get down, telling him he would surely get a ticket.”
