The court also slapped a fine of Rs.10,000 each on Shailender, his father Braham Singh and mother Santosh.

“Keeping in view the fact and circumstances of the present case and having regard to the nature and gravity of the offence, I am of the considered opinion that the convicts do not deserve any leniency,” Additional Sessions Judge Paramjit Singh said.

Sonia, who was pursuing her master’s degree in engineering at the Delhi College of Engineering, hanged herself from the ceiling of her hostel room Oct 15, 2005 following torture by her husband and in-laws as her parents had not given them a car in dowry.

Shailender, also an engineering student, and Sonia had a love marriage Feb 13, 2005. However, their relations came under strain as he and his family members started assaulting her for not bringing a car in dowry.
