Gujarat to probe police-bootlegger nexus

By IANS,

Gandhinagar : To probe the alleged nexus between bootleggers and police, the Gujarat government has ordered scrutiny of the service records of the cops allegedly linked to the illicit liquor deaths in the state last month.

The scrutiny is being carried out to know if these policemen were earlier posted in any other area in Gujarat where cases against bootleggers had been filed previously.

Two constables of Ahmedabad’s Kagdapith police station were arrested Saturday and are being interrogated, a police official said Sunday.

“We are questioning the bootleggers arrested in connection with the tragedy to investigate the role of policemen in the entire racket,” the official said.

The arrest of constables is the first major crackdown to probe the police-bootlegger nexus.

Six cops, including two officers, were suspended for their alleged involvement in the hooch tragedy, which claimed 136 lives in Ahmedabad last month.
