Shouting slogans for creation of a Bundelkhand state, protesters converged at the Ghutai railway station on the outskirts of Mahoba, some 300 km from Lucknow, and stopped the Jhansi-Allahabad Passenger train. They also tried to damage the rail tracks there, but were prevented from doing so by police, the officials added.

“After hectic efforts, we managed to pacify the protesters, who carried out demonstrations at the railway station for a Bundelkhand state,” government Railway Police (GRP) Inspector Maharaj Singh, told reporters in Mahoba.

The Bundelkhand Ekikrit Party is one of the several local parties seeking statehood for the region, which spans parts of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.
