Protests against paramilitary troopers rock Srinagar

Srinagar : Two paramilitary troopers and many civilians were injured in a clash here Tuesday when protesters pelted stones demanding removal of a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) unit in an uptown area of Srinagar.

The stone pelting protesters clashed with the security forces in Maisuma area in the heart of city centre Lal Chowk of summer capital Srinagar Tuesday afternoon.

Police used batons and fired tear smoke canisters at the protesters who kept on regrouping from lanes and bylanes in the area.

Several people, including civilians and security persons, were injured in the clash.

The protesters were demanding removal of the CRPF unit posted in Maisuma area.

“Two CRPF troopers were injured in the stone pelting by the protesters and two of our vehicles have been extensively damaged,” Prabhakar Tripathi, CRPF spokesperson told reporters.

Shopkeepers in the area alleged that angry CRPF troopers damaged their merchandise and beat them up even though they had not been part of the protesting mob.
