Kochi : Cochin Shipyard Ltd (CSL), India’s largest ship building yard, has successfully converted a Singaporean fishing vessel into a seismic survey vessel, the company said here Friday.
Seismic vessels are used for offshore surveys and provides an image of the seabed and its geological structure.
Based on these images oil companies decide where to drill for oil and gas. The heightened exploration for new offshore hydrocarbon deposits has driven the demand for modern seismographic vessels.
According to project officer Rajesh Gopalakrishnan, the challenge was not so much in the technical complications of the work but in its conceptualization, detailed engineering, documentation and the procedure for obtaining the classification.
“It is really a great achievement that we could complete the project on time, that too a week in advance. SKA Marine, Chennai contributed in the conversion design,” said Gopalakrishnan. SKA Marine is a marine services provider and sub-contractor.
In a press statement issued here Friday, CSL said the work was completed seven days ahead of schedule. The contract for the project was signed April 3 last year, and the ship arrived in the yard May 4 from Singapore.
The vessel MV Pavlosk, is 62 metres long, 14 metres wide, 9.2 metres wide and has a draft of five metres.
