Kapalua (Hawaii) : Defending champion Daniel Chopra bounced back from his first day disaster to card a four-under 69 in the second round at the par-73 course in the Mercedes Benz Golf Championship.
Chopra, who shot a disastrous 79 on opening day is now two-over 148 for two days here Friday. Chopra is tied 28th in the tournament restricted to previous season’s winners only.
Meanwhile, Geoff Ogilvy dropped his first bogey in 35 holes on the 17th on the second day but still held his lead at the half-way stage of the US PGA Tour’s season-opening event in Hawaii.
The 31-year-old former US Open champion Ogilvy added a five-under-par 68 to his bogey-free 67 on the opening day at Kapalua’s Plantation Course. After 36 holes he is at 11-under 135 – one shot ahead of American D.J. Trahan and two clear of South African Ernie Els.
Joint ninth overnight, Trahan was in superb form with a seven-under-par 66.
South African Ernie Els made a slow start to the second round but found his range on the back nine which he played in three-under. He posted a 69. Japan’s Ryuji Imada added a 70 to his opening 69 and is among six players in a share of fourth spot, alongside Anthony Kim, Kenny Perry, Sean O’Hair, Johnson Wagner and Davis Love.
