Haryana Urdu Akademi budget raised to Rs 70 lakh

New Delhi: With an aim to expand the activities of Haryana Urdu Akademi the state government of Haryana yesterday decided to raise Akademi’s annual budget from the current Rs.50 lakh to Rs.70 lakh for 2009-10.

The General Body of the Akademi, in its meeting chaired by Haryana Education Minister Mange Ram Gupta on January 13 in Chandigarh, took the decision to the effect.

It was also decided that amount of some awards given by the Akademi will be raised. The winner of the Munshi Gumani Lal Award will now get Rs.21,000 and that of Surender Pandit Soz Award Rs.11,000. Similarly, the prize money for outstanding books has been raised from Rs.7,000 to Rs.11,000 and financial assistance for printing of manuscripts from Rs.10,000 to Rs.15,000. Moreover, the financial assistance given to literary organisations for organising literary functions has been raised from Rs.7,000 to Rs.10,000.

The General Body meeting also decided to enhance the total amount of financial assistance admissible to indigent writers from Haryana up to Rs 50,000.

Aiming at furthering the improvement of the Akademi the state government has also constituted a committee to be headed by Higher Education Commissioner. The committee will study and revise the 22-year-old constitution of the Akademi. Haryana Urdu Akademi was established in 1985 with the sole objective of promotion and development of Urdu language and literature in the state.

Other decisions taken by the Akademi include holding of three all-India mushairas – at Panchkula, Yamunanagar and Mewat – and continuation of correspondence course of Urdu Language as the programme run by the Akademi has been a success.
