Islamabad : NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer is scheduled to meet Pakistani leadership Thursday to discuss the Pak-Afghan border security and also the security of route for NATO supplies that has been hit by persistent militants’ attacks.
The Secretary General arrived here Wednesday night to discuss the country’s cooperation in the war on terror and issues related to regional security.
He was holding a meeting with Federal Defense Minister, Ahmed Mukhtar.
According to official sources, he is also scheduled to meet Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, President Asif Zardari, Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi, and several other senior defense officials to discuss the regional security situation.
This visit comes amid intensified Taliban attack on NATO’s main lifeline through Pakistan. Hundreds of trucks loaded with military vehicles, food supplies, and other items were torched.
The US-led NATO troops in Afghanistan are working to open new supply routes to the war-torn country through Russia and Central Asia and negotiations are underway in this regard with former Soviet republics of Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan.
